So I finally bought myself a digital SLR. I’ve wanted an SLR since I was a teenager and started to play around with my fathers Canon AE-1. I went and bought a Canon EOS 50D with the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. I also picked up an EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens.
So far I’m very pleased with my purchases. Time will tell however after the initial joy of having my new toy elapses and I can be more critical about what it can and can’t do. I had also been looking at the Canon Rebel T1i as it is much smaller and lighter and I am concerned about how heavy the 50D is. The heavier and bulkier a camera is, the less likely you are to carry it around on a regular basis. I suspect I will leave my Canon PowerShot SD870 IS in my bag all the time and only bring out the 50D when I intend to take pictures. That being said, I will be taking it with me to Germany this summer.
I am still figuring out the camera and have much reading to do before I can say that I fully understand it and know how to take full advantage of it. On top of that, I have to review good photography practices. It has been a while since I’ve had a camera that you need to do more than point and shoot.
Here are few pictures I’ve taken over the last few days. I need to watch out for my shaky hands when using the 50mm lens in low light.

I’ve been on-and-off looking at digital cameras lately, in anticipation of having something around of which I’ll want lots of pictures. 😉 What’s a good everyday camera for someone who has little or no interest in actual photography?
I like my Canon Powershot SD870 IS. It takes nice pictures, is pretty quick and fits in your pocket. I would never buy a camera without image stabilization as I have shaky hands. The most important choice of all with a camera is deciding what you will actually carry with you. You will never use it if you don’t have the camera with you. You are better to have a low end camera that you use then an expensive one that collects dust on a shelf.
If you don’t like Canon, you should look at the Lumix series from Panasonic.
Here’s my camera at the place I buy all my camera stuff. Aden Camera is a great shop.

The Canon EOS 50D looks really like a great camera. Until now I found a lot of good reviews about it. Are there any alternatives for beginners which are a little cheaper?
